I am a ceramicist working in Lynchburg, Virginia. Most of my ceramic instruction has been through videos and books and through workshops with potters such as Michael Kline, Fong Choo and Steve Kelley. My academic background is in art history. Though making was not a part of my education, art history provided me invaluable time to research historical pottery and handle objects I wouldn’t have otherwise had access to, letting me see exactly how they were made.
I work with mid-fire stoneware, making a range of functional and decorative work. My shapes are expressive, but restrained. I allow the signs of making to remain present, but soften them under thick glazes. The most important qualities in my glazes are color and texture. I want my pots to grab someone's attention from across the room, invite people to pick them up, and feel so lovely they are difficult to put down.
